AdSense Optimization Boot Camp Tip #2

If you are a publisher who has multiple ad units on a page, whether it is because of personal preference or simply because it is a long content-heavy page, you need to make sure your placement isn't leaving revenue on the table. Time and time again I have helped clients optimize their AdSense ads, only to discover they had the highest paying ads are showing in the lower CTR ad units... meaning that the ad unit that has the most clicks by visitors is showing lower paying ads. This means they are making less than they could be!

It is important to know that Google distributes ads on a first come, first serve basis. So the ad units that the mediapartners bot sees FIRST in the HTML code is the one that will show the first (and best) ads. The bot does not look at the overall page output in a browser, so just because the ad is at the top of the page when you look at it in your browser does not make a difference if it is not also the first ad listed in the HTML. The key is which ad unit appears first in the HTML code.

First, you need to figure out which ad unit is the one with the highest CTR. Pick out a few pages with the most clicks overall, and set up individual channels for each ad unit. Name them something obvious so you don't get confused looking at the stats, that makes it easy to see which ad unit has the higher placement in the HTML code (not the one that is highest on the webpage when you look at it) such as "first in html" "second in html", or something that you can remember which ad units appear first, second and third when it comes time to analyze the results. Let them run for a week or so, then analyze the results.

Now, check your stats, bringing up those channels. Which ad unit has the highest CTR? If you see the "first in html" channel, all is good. Now, if "second in html" or "third in html", you have some work to do. You need to take the one with the highest CTR and make sure it is the one that appears first in your HTML, such as through the magic of CSS. If "first in html" only had one click worth seven cents in the week, you might just want to remove that ad unit to make it quick and easy for you.

Don't fall into the mistake of ignoring click through rate and simply looking at revenue. Why? Because enough clicks on a low CTR ad unit that is showing the highest paying ads could result in more revenue than fewer clicks on the higher paying ads. So it is the CTR you want to be comparing. This will also help weed out any potential geotargeting issues that could be skewing it - where users from countries outside of your target market area could be seeing ads worth much more/less than the ones insideyour target area. If you use an ad serving program that supports geotargeting, you can serve these special "... in html" channels only to your target market country, while serving up alternative channels to those outside of the market area.

Even if you think you know which ad unit must make the most money, without individually tracking them, it is always worthwhile in the long run to test it an ensure what you think is true really is true!

Watch for Tip #3 tomorrow, which is a privacy policy readers can use for their sites running AdSense. AdSense Optimization Boot Camp Tip # 1

I am a firm believer (with the stats to back it up) that adding a second AdSense placement on a webpage can lead to a loss of revenue, because with lower paying ads in a second ad unit, you can lose revenue per click when someone clicks those second ad placement ads instead of the first. You can make a lot more money with a single well-placed ad unit over having multiple ad units.

The other disadvantage of having multiple ad units is that they can make your site seem very "ad heavy", something which many people try and avoid. For one, it is not very user-friendly, and when you hit that tipping point of ads vs. content, it can seem more "Made for AdSense"-ish than most prefer, where you want people to click on the ads and not bother with what you have to say.

An alternate solution is to use an AdSense image ad only placement, where only an image ad will show, and text ads will not display. This will help keep down the number of text ads appearing on your site (especially if you are already supplementing AdSense with other types of text ads or text links).

A couple things to keep in mind when you do this:

Because most people have their accounts set to either text only or text/image ads, you will need to select "image ads only" when you generate your AdSense code.

Second (and third) ad units on a page won't display PSAs, but you can use the collapse ad space javascript.

Use a channel so you can track revenue

Be sure to pick an image ad friendly ad size. These are:

Leaderboard (728x90)

Banner (468x60)

Skyscraper (120x600)

Wide Skyscraper (160x600)

Small square (200x200)

Square (250x250)

Medium Rectangle (300x250)

Large rectangle (336x280)

If ad inventory could be an issue (depending on both the market area and physical location of your visitors), start with a banner ad or one of the more common rectangles.

You may also see video ads show in the image ad space. If you prefer video, avoid using the banner ad size in the above ad unit size list.

If your website has room to accomodate an image ad as a secondary ad unit - or to replace a secondary ad unit - it can be worth testing to increase ad revenue.

It is extremely long overdue, but I have finally ported JenSense.com (successfully, I think!) from being MovableType to Wordpress. So along with it, a new blog design, although you will see that changed over the coming weeks too... I wanted to focus on the technical aspects first, before diving into esthetics!

    IF YOU SEE THIS MESSAGE... You need to update your RSS to the new feed, as I will stop updating this MovableType RSS feed. The new feed URL is http://www.jensense.com/feed/. Thanks for updating!

If you notice any weirdness or redirects not working properly, please let me know... nearly all of the redirects are in place, although I still have a couple hundred pages left to redirect later today. But there are some issues with blog posts that had quotes in them.

Some interesting things I learned in the changeover:

I have written over 400 blog entries (I had no idea it was that many!), mostly on AdSense & YPN, since I launched this in 2004.

There are well over 2000 comments, although I know probably double that didn't make the changeover due to all the blog spam it was mixed up in (over 200k worth), especially when comments were made a few days after the entry was posted. So sorry for anyone whose comments didn't make the move, it wasn't personal, honest!

My Google AdSense smart pricing post I did in 2005 still has thousands of page views a month. I am working on an update on smart pricing, so watch for that this month. My arbitrage publisher accounts being disabled wasn't too far behind it with monthly page views. And, many people are still reading about Jason Calacanis.

Half of my blog entries are still viewed at least once a day.

This post on adCenter had way more blog spam than any other entry on the entire blog, although I am not sure what was particularly appealing to blog spammers on this one! It used to be this one until I made it no comment.

MovableType has nasty URLs for doing 301s... none of the workarounds worked without throwing off a ton of 404s, so all the redirects had to be done by hand.

JenSense is going to begin accepting advertising, now that it is changed over to WP. If you would like to sponsor JenSense, please contact me. Of course, I reserve the right to refuse any advertiser, so be warned!

You should probably update your feeds, I am not sure how wonderfully the feed redirects will work with all RSS readers coming from the old MT feed URLs. The new feed address is http://www.JenSense.com/feed/ to resubscribe.

Lastly, now that the whole "moving to Wordpress" is nearly complete, I am going to do something I have wanted to do for a while... the Jenstar AdSense Optimization Boot Camp! Each day in March I am going to post an optimization tip or suggestion you can use to increase your AdSense and/or YPN income for the month of March. And the privacy policy sample will be this week as one of the tips. Another reason you should make sure you have the right feed ;)

And if you have Twitter, follow me as I will post breaking news there first, while I am working on a longer blog entry on it.

That's it! Please let me know on any weirdness, or if there is something you would like me to address in the AdSense boot camp!

It's that time again, the update of the AdSense terms & conditions as well as the program policies. Now, everyone has to agree to the new terms and conditions, and then don't forget that when you approved the terms and conditions, you automatically accepted the policies as well. Sorry for the slight delay, I was enroute to SMX, and was about 10 minutes from leaving for the airport when AdSense first blogged that today was the new Terms drop day. Thank you to all those publishers who forwarded copies of the terms & conditions to me, it was much appreciated and gave me something to do on the flight!

First, let's start with the policies.

Product-Specific Policies

The only change here was that they added AdSense for Video, linking to a new policies page here. The HTML coding was done incorrectly so you may not be able to view this change, and will see the updated date of February 2008 linked to the page instead.

Now, onto the changes to the AdSense Terms & Conditions, which are much more tedious!

One notable change is the fact that Google has changed all the terminology in the Terms and Conditions from "sites" to "properties" when referring to where publishers are placing their advertisements. This change was likely made to accommodate those publishers who are placing ads within their own videos. So I won't detail every instance the only change was made to make it from Site(s) to Property(ies) since they are numerous and they were all changed.

While the majority of changes were due to the addition of AdSense for Video, there were some other changes, as detailed below.

1. Program Participation
The first change is a very minor one, the change is made on italics.

Participation in the Program is subject to Google's prior approval and Your continued compliance with the Program Policies...

And the next part is a pretty big change and addition, I have bolded a very significant change:

agree that Google may serve (a) third party and/or Google provided advertisements and/or other content (such third party provided advertisements, Google provided advertisements and other content, collectively, "Ads"), provided, however, that if Google serves non-compensated content, You will have the ability to opt out of receiving such content as part of the Program, (b) related Google queries and/or Ad search box(es) (collectively, “Links”), (c) Google Web and/or Site search results (collectively, "Search Results"), and/or (d) Google referral Ads (“Referral Buttons”), each in connection with the Web site(s), media player(s), video content and/or mobile content that You designate, or such other properties expressly authorized in writing by Google (including by electronic mail) (such other properties, “Other Properties”), and the Atom, RSS, or other feeds distributed through such Web site(s) , media player(s), video content, mobile content and/or Other Properties (each such Web site, media player, video content, mobile content, Other Property or feed, a "Property"). For the avoidance of doubt, any reference in this Agreement or the Program Policies to an individual “Web page”, “Web site”, “Web site page” or the like that is part of the Property will also mean feeds and media players distributed through such Web site. Multiple accounts held by the same individual or entity are subject to immediate termination unless expressly authorized in writing by Google (including by electronic mail). In some circumstances expressly authorized in writing by Google (including by electronic mail), You may enroll in the Program and create an account for the sole purpose of receiving payment from Google, and not, for purposes of clarification, for the purpose of displaying Ads, Links, Search Results and/or Referral Buttons on a Property. If, however, You subsequently use your Account to participate in the Program (i.e. for the purpose of displaying Ads, Links, Search Results and/or Referral Buttons on a Property), then such use of the Program will be governed by the terms of this Agreement. You must have and abide by an appropriate privacy policy that clearly discloses that third parties may be placing and reading cookies on your users’ browser, or using web beacons to collect information, in the course of ads being served on your website. Your privacy policy should also include information about user options for cookie management.

WOW. So now all publishers must have a privacy policy simply for showing AdSense ads. I would be willing to bet about 99.99% of all AdSense publishers are currently in violation of this one. And it is a very "big brother is watching" all encompassing one, to boot. I will create an AdSense-friendly privacy policy for publishers to use, if they'd like, since now I will have to make one for my own websites. But WOW.

This section also means that any feeds a publisher distributes on the site, as well as any media etc will be covered under the "Property(ies)" designation in the new terms.

2. Implementation and Operation of Ads, Search Results, and Referrals.
Interestingly, they didn't change the heading of this section to include AdSense for Video, despite it being added as a subsection.

AdSense for Search
Curiously, they removed "Each Web page(s) that contains a Search Box must also contain other content related to Your Site." So this means that publishers can create pages that have nothing other than a search box, which also means many websites currently in violation of this policy are now perfectly legal in the eyes of AdSense.

Also, I have bolded an addition here:

You will send any and all queries (without editing, filtering, truncating, appending terms to or otherwise modifying such queries individually or in the aggregate) to Google

I would guess that some non-compliant publishers were truncating longtail searches to higher paying short tail searches (ie. changing "loans for single moms texas" to "loans"). Likewise, some publishers might have been inserting higher paying keywords into searches done by their users (ie. changing "Texas" to "Texas loans").

They also made a slight wording change from "(without editing, modifying, or filtering such queries individually or in the aggregate)" to "without editing, filtering, truncating, appending terms to or otherwise modifying such queries individually or in the aggregate".

They have also stressed the fact that the Google search results pages hosted by Google can change in appearance at any time, by adding the following bolded part.

and the format, look and feel of those Web pages hosted by Google may be modified by Google from time to time.

AdSense for Content

The following has been removed:

In addition, You agree that while You may display more than one (1) Ad Unit on each Site Web page, You shall not display any Ad Unit on a page that contains Ads associated with another Google AdSense customer (e.g., Your Web hosting company), unless authorized to do so by Google.

Essentially, this means that now if you are a webhost monetizing with AdSense, that your hosting customers will now be able to also place their own AdSense on those pages, without having to seek permission to do so (although granted, most didn't get permission for it anyway).

Referrals

The following has been removed:

Each Web page(s) that contains a Referral Button must also contain other content related to Your Site.

Well, I can't say this is a good move from a user experience point of view. But it is from a publisher point of view... because now you can publish pages with absolutely no content but a referral ad unit button on the page. I can already see pay per click advertisers jumping on this one to test conversions on it, now that you don't have to have anything else on the page to distract a visitor with.

Another minor change in bold:

End users who click on a Referral Button will be directed to a Web page that may be hosted by Google

The previous version said "will".

AdSense for Video

This entire section was added:

AdSense for Video. If you have elected to use AdSense for Video, Your participation is subject to your continued compliance with the AdSense for Video Program policies located at http://adsense.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=73987 or the URL as Google may provide from time to time. All Ads (including Ads served in response to end user clicks on and queries entered into Links, if any) shall be (1) grouped by Google and displayed with Links (where applicable) to end users of the Property(ies) as Ad Unit(s) or (2) pre-, post- or interstitial roll in connection with third party video content, in each case in standard formats as offered generally by Google from time to time, as may be further described in the applicable policies. You acknowledge and agree that the Ads will be displayed on the Property in a video format approved by Google, and that such Ads: (i) shall only be displayed in connection with the Property(ies) and non-advertisement video content (collectively “Video Media”), all of which is subject to review and approval by Google in its discretion at any time; and (ii) shall only be requested in connection with end user initiated Video Media. In addition, You agree that You may only display one (1) Ad Unit within Your media player at any single time, unless otherwise approved by Google in writing.

General; Serviced Pages; Filtering; Beta Features.

This section was renamed from just "General".

The following was removed:

If You have elected to receive content or Site-based Ads, You further agree not to display on any Serviced Page any non-Google content-targeted advertisement(s). If You have elected to receive Search Results on any Site(s), You agree that Google will be the exclusive provider of Internet search services on such Site(s).

So you are welcone to use another search service on your sites alongside AdSense for Search. Again, a curious decision, and wondered if they removed it as they pretty much already dominate the smaller publishers with their search service.

They also changed the wording on the beta feature offerings, which was previously unnamed as beta features. They removed:

Google may also include in certain services features which are unsupported under Google's then current technical documentation. Such features are provided "as is" and Your use of them shall be undertaken solely at Your own risk.

And replaced it with:

"Some Program features are identified as “Beta” or otherwise unsupported (“Beta Features”). To the fullest extent permitted by law, Beta Features are provided "as is" and at Your option and risk. You shall not disclose to any third party any information from Beta Features, existence of non-public Beta Features or access to Beta Features.

Now, this is a tricky one. This means that if you are given a beta feature to test out, you cannot tell anyone you are testing it, or that it even exists. Makes people like me not want to be in the betas so we can blog about it! Hopefully people will still blab ;) But many of the beta features are easily spottable to the trained eye.

3. Communications Solely with Google
No changes were made to this section.

4. Parties' Responsibilities
No changes were made to this section.

5. Prohibited Uses

The following bolded part was added.

You shall not, and shall not authorize or encourage any third party to: (i) directly or indirectly generate queries, Referral Events, or impressions of or clicks on any Ad, Link, Search Result, or Referral Button  (including without limitation by clicking on “play” for any video Ad) through any automated, deceptive, fraudulent or other invalid means, including but not limited to through repeated manual clicks, the use of robots or other automated query tools and/or computer generated search requests, and/or the unauthorized use of other search engine optimization services and/or software;

Not really much of a surprise there, don't encourage video clicks, just like you don't encourage clicks on the regular AdSense ads.

And in the second point of that section, additions are bolded:

edit, modify, filter, truncate or change the order of the information contained in any Ad, Link, Ad Unit, Search Result, or Referral Button, or remove, obscure or minimize any Ad, Link, Ad Unit, Search Result, or Referral Button in any way without authorization from Google;

Makes you wonder what they are allowing some publishers to test!

And another change under the things publishers cannot do, this time what is in bold was removed from the new terms.

display any Ad(s), Link(s), or Referral Button(s) on any error page, on any registration or "thank you" page (e.g., a page that thanks a user after he/she has registered with the applicable Web site), on any chat page, in any email, or on any Web page or any Web site that contains any pornographic, hate-related, violent, or illegal content;

Is that the sound of publishers adding AdSense to chat pages, emails, 404 pages, registration pages and thank you pages? I think so!

Under point iv, they removed:

(e.g., while Search Results may be indirectly accessed from Your Site(s), they may only be displayed on the appropriate Google-hosted Web page);

This merely brings it in-line with the fact you can now host your own results pages, although the results are still served by Google.

They have also added:

(ix) disseminate malware; (x) create a new account to use the Program after Google has terminated this Agreement with You as a result of your breach of this Agreement; or

Not really surprising, malware=bad and the second is for those publishers who try to sneakily get a new AdSense account after being suspended / terminated.

6. Termination; Cancellation

No changes were made.

7. Confidentiality

No changes were made.

8. No Guarantee

The following was added:

In addition, for the avoidance of doubt, Google does not guarantee the Program will be operable at all times or during any down time (i) caused by outages to any public Internet backbones, networks or servers, (ii) caused by any failures of Your equipment, systems or local access services, (iii) for previously scheduled maintenance or (iv) relating to events beyond Google’s (or its wholly owned subsidiaries’) control such as strikes, riots, insurrection, fires, floods, explosions, war, governmental action, labor conditions, earthquakes, natural disasters, or interruptions in Internet services to an area where Google (or its wholly owned subsidiaries) or Your servers are located or co-located.

Wow, I think they covered just about everything. I find it interesting they added issues on the publisher's end... wonder if a publisher got cranky with Google when it was their own hosting that was down, and not anything related to Google having problems serving ads.

9. No Warranty

The following in bold was added:

TO THE EXTENT ADS, LINKS, AND SEARCH RESULTS ARE BASED ON OR DISPLAYED IN CONNECTION WITH NON-GOOGLE CONTENT, GOOGLE SHALL NOT HAVE ANY LIABILITY IN CONNECTION WITH THE DISPLAY OF SUCH ADS, LINKS, AND SEARCH RESULTS.

10. Limitations of Liability; Force Majeure.

No changes were made.

11. Payment

The part that said Google will not pay for "Google advertisements for its own products and/or services (excluding payments based on completed Referral Events);" was removed.

The following was added:

From time to time Google may be holding funds, payments and other amounts due to You in connection with the AdSense Program. You acknowledge and agree that Google may, without further notice to You, contribute to a charitable organization selected by Google all funds, payments and other amounts related to the AdSense Program that are held by Google and that are due to you (if any), but which Google is unable to pay or deliver to You because Your account is Inactive (as defined below). “Inactive” means that, based on Google’s records: (a) for a period of two (2) years or more You have not logged into your account or accepted funds, payments or other amounts that Google has attempted to pay or deliver to You, and (b) Google has been unable to reach You, or has not received adequate payment instructions from You, after contacting You at the address shown in Google’s records.

I am guessing they have had issues with publisher deaths when they do not receive details on paying out to the estate, etc.

12. Publicity
No changes were made to this section.

13. Representations and Warranties

The change to this is for the video ads.

In addition, to the extent that Your Site is a media player (1) You represent and warrant that You have a valid license to use and distribute such media player (including all content therein, including without limitation any Ads or Ad Units) for the purposes of this Agreement and the Program; and (2) You shall ensure that any media player(s) that constitute the Site shall comply with the terms and conditions set forth herein. You further represent and warrant that each Property and any material displayed therein: (i) comply with all applicable laws, statutes, ordinances, and regulations; (ii) do not breach and have not breached any duty toward or rights of any person or entity including, without limitation, rights of intellectual property, publicity or privacy, or rights or duties under consumer protection, product liability, tort, or contract theories; and (iii) are not pornographic, hate-related or otherwise violent in content.

Most of this is pretty obvious, but you know at least one publisher will try and upload a celebrity porn tape and put AdSense on it!

14. Your Obligation to Indemnify.

No changes made to this section.

15. Google Rights

Addition in bold:

You acknowledge that Google owns all right, title and interest, including without limitation all Intellectual Property Rights (as defined below), in and to the Program (including Google's ad serving technology, search technology, referral technology, and Brand Features, including implied licenses, and excluding items licensed by Google from third parties

And more minor changes:

You will not remove, obscure, or alter Google's copyright notice, Brand Features, or other proprietary rights notices affixed to or contained within any Google services, software, or documentation (including without limitation the display of Google’s Brand Features with Ads, Links, Search Boxes, Search Results, and/or Referral Buttons, as applicable).

16. Information Rights

17. Miscellaneous

No changes were made.

Whew! That's all folks! Sorry for the delay, I was traveling to SMX and was working on this on the airplane and finishing it up in the hotel. Sorry for any air turbulence typos! What is your take on the changes?

It seems like everyone on my Twitter is headed off to SMX West this week, and I will be joining everyone Tuesday and getting ready for my session on Thursday.

So, want some freebie AdSense placement advice? Jeremy Schoemaker (AKA Shoemoney) & myself will be dishing out some contextual advertising advice to those brave enough to volunteer their sites. We try and cover a variety of sites, and even if you don't volunteer your site, you will come away with plenty of ideas of how you can apply some of them to your own. I know I have heard from people who increased their earnings by following our suggestions, so stop by and get monetized! We speak Thursday at 4pm, the session is "Contextual Ads & AdSense Checkup"

I will be around throughout the week, so feel free to have a quick chat if you see me. If you are interested in my consulting services and will be at SMX, feel free to contact me and we can meet while I am there. I have a few events scheduled in the evenings, but afterwards you will very likely find me in one of the hotel's lounges or bars... which is where all the real networking happens :)

Posting a lot of videos to YouTube and stream at least a million views a month? Oh, and of course, are living in the US? You can know sign up for the AdSense for Video beta. It has been in pilot test mode for a select few advertisers... so select in fact, I don't think I have ever seen one in my random daily web travels (don't confuse AdSense for Video with the AdSense video ads, where some ad units display video ads instead of a regular text or image ad unit).

These new ads are actually text ad overlays that appear on the bottom part of a YouTube streamed video. The bottom 20% of the video will show ads. During the video with text overlay ads, up to ten ads will appear in the bottom, where they will cycle through with 20 seconds on-screen time each. Users can choose to turn off the ads while viewing the video, so you aren't "stuck" seeing ads if you don't want to. Clicking an ad will open it up in a new browser window or tab. And after the video plays, three relevant ads will appear in the video window.

Want to see it in action? BobVila.com has been running them as part of the pilot on this video (sorry, you will have to click through an interstitial ad to get to the video). This is what it looks like on the screen (click the image to see the full size version):

Want to see more of them in action? Google has some case studies online. And they have more sample videos to show the differences between the two styles - InVideo overlay ads, and test overlay ads.

There are not specifics on how much publishers can earn with AdSense for Video, although there are two models being used depending on the circumstances.

One problem I saw is that some of the InVideo overlay ads ended up having logos and/or text covered up by the "Ads by Google" which is clearly the top layer in the video. So they might need to add some documentation for advertisers to avoid this problem (I saw it on the Real-life Simpsons video with the Bee Movie ad).

InVideo ads are paid on a CPM basis, since the ads are animated and "play" at the same time as the video. The text ads run on a CPC basis so advertisers only pay if the ad is clicked. Obviously, it will be much more profitable for publishers to run the CPM ads, since I just can't see a high CTR rate on the text overlay ads.

The program is only available to US publishers now (although we are teased that they will open it to more publishers of smaller sizes in other countries). And there is a minimum of one million video streams per month.

Right now it is only for YouTube videos, meaning you need to upload your videos to YouTube in order to profit from them via AdSense.

They also still have their YouTube Partner Program which allows video creators (instead of those just streaming other people's videos) to earn money when their videos are viewed. That landing page does remind me of an affiliate spam page, rather than a page for a Google property publisher program.

Are you an advertiser wanting to advertise in videos? Right now it is only available to those advertisers who have managed accounts (ie. have an account rep). But you can request to be contacted when it opens to regular advertisers, if you do not have a rep. There are also case studies from an advertiser perspective.

As for advertisers, you ads are already showing on YouTube videos if you are using the content network. So you don't need to opt-in to appear. If you prefer to opt-out of the text overlay ads, you can contact your account rep or send an email to AdWords support. You can choose to have your ads removed from all video, or just the ones that individual users are embedding on their own sites. You can find more here.

Many publishers have been annoyed by the problem where the "top channels" reporting link in the AdSense account control panel on the overview page stopped working just under a month ago. This was a handy feature nearly every publisher used to be able to quickly see what the top earning channels are, without having to pull a full report and manually sorting them by earnings amount. There was a "top channels" workaround, but it was still a few extra steps required by publishers who were just looking for a quickie snapshot of what the account is doing.

The issue has been corrected, and the "top channels" link on the overview page (the page you land on after logging into your AdSense account) will not automatically sort and display the top channels based on overall earnings amount.

I am happy this has been fixed, although I am surprised it took so long for it to be corrected. I heard from many webmasters who consider this the most important part of the AdSense control panel, well, other than the little tool that generates the javascript to actually display the ads ;) So when you login to your account, you should see that the problem has been resolved and your top earning channels will be displayed, instead of the random assortment of channels that has been showing for the past few weeks.

The feature broke right around the same time that some new changes and features to the control panel were announced, so there was speculation that something in the change was related to the "top channels" failing to work properly. So we might be able to expect some new shiny toys to play with in our AdSense accounts soon!

Google AdSense referral changes on the fly mean huge loss of earnings for publishers

Have you made a Google AdSense referral in the last month or two? If you have, chances are pretty good that instead of that nice $250 commission you thought you'd be earning, you will instead be getting only $100 for that new publisher.

Google has severely cut back not only on the payments they are offering for new signups, but also just how many people will be able to even offer these referral products to their visitors.

First, Google is dropping back the earnings that publishers can get from referring new AdSense publishers. While you could earn $250 when a publisher earned $100 within 180 days, now AdSense has decided to drop that by over half, down to only $100 for that same referral. Google is making the change in the last week of January. And that $5 bonus for new initial signups? It is now gone, as is the $2000 bonus for referring 25 new publishers who do meet the $100 in 180 days.

But in what is an even worse move, is that it is going to affect all those referrals initially made prior to their announcement on their blog and prior to their last week of January change. What does this mean for publishers? If you made a referral in December, but that publisher doesn't earn their first $100 until February, instead of earning that expected $250 referral amount - the amount stated when the referral was initially made to Google, that publisher will now only earn $100. So through no fault of the publisher who in good faith got a new AdSense publisher for Google, Google has just dropped the expected $250 to $100, despite there being no notice at the time the referral was initially generated that Google would be dropping the earnings on the referral so drastically.

Then to top if off, AdSense had decided to drop nearly all foreign webmasters from the program as well. If you live in North America, Latin America or Japan, you are in the clear. But Google has excluded some major countries out of the program, including the UK as well as Australia. According to Google, the program has not performed well in those regions, but I would be clearly surprised if bloggers such as Australia-based Darren Rowse (AKA ProBlogger) didn't refer enough new publishers to the program to keep it alive there, as he states he personally has referred thousands of new publishers who met the $100 in 180 days criteria.

And what is worse, is publishers such as Darren who have conversions in progress (meaning someone has already signed up but is still working on the $100 in 180 days) will lose ALL commissions if those in progress don't manage to reach the $100 mark by the time the change occurs sometime in the end of January.

Like most of Google AdSense decisions regarding the use of their products and features outside of the US, it isn't based on where the majority of your traffic is based, but rather where the publisher is physically based. So a publisher in the UK with 99.9% US traffic would be excluded from promoting Google AdSense.

This is a very poor decision by Google. I can appreciate that they may not want to offer AdSense signups in specific countries, whether it is a fraud issue, lack of conversions or simple overabundance. But they are in the wrong to make this change without honoring their committment to publishers who have already sent those new publishers to Google. And they could have avoided the major media firestorm they are now experiencing by going about the change in a different way.

So, what should Google AdSense have done so that while some publishers might not have been happy with the decision but would at least not feel cheated over expected earnings either being dropped or cut entirely? They should have honored all the new AdSense signups made up until they make the official change at the end of January, even if the conversion is made after the change. So if an AdSense publisher referred a new publisher to AdSense last week, even if the conversion of $100 in 180 days isn't made until March, that publisher should still get the $250, as that is what the amount was when the publisher - in good faith - sent that new referral to Google. And likewise, if the publisher is outside the new "chosen areas" and referred a new publisher last week, they should still get $250 even if the $100 in 180 days isn't reached until March, because again, that publisher sent the new publisher to Google AdSense in good faith. And what Google is doing here is definitely in bad faith for all publishers promoting AdSense.

If you are still being annoyed by the sorting issue that Google is having with their "top channels" on the reporting overview page, there is a workaround that some publishers may not have thought of. You can save a custom report, and then click on it from your control panel.

Simply go into Advance Reports, and select the date range of "Today", then click Show Channel Data. Select "All", unless you prefer to select your most important channels, then select Group by Channel. Click the display report button and once the data is showing, click the "Earnings" link to sort by earnings, with the top earning channels first. Then, after you have sorted by earnings (not before!) go to the "Save as Custom Report" and enter in your report name, then press Save.

Now, when you login, simply scroll down to the custom reports listing on the overview page, and you can see all your top earning channels with one click, and it will stay sorted with the highest earning channels first. You may also want to do a second one for "yesterday" as well.

There is still no end in sight to this problem being fixed, so this is a quick and easy workaround in the meantime.

Google sent November earnings payments to AdSense publishers in Australia amd New Zealand with one major error... the currency exchange rate was inverted. So publishers ended up with less earnings that they should have, although fortunately because of the exchange rate, most were only shorted by a few hundred dollars, instead of the potential for thousands of dollars for other currencies with exchange rates not nearly as close to par.

AdSenseAdvisor posted on the issue at WebmasterWorld:

Hi all,
Our payments team asked me to let you know that they're aware of this conversion issue with AU currency payments, and will be contacting affected publishers shortly.

Thanks for your patience, and we apologize for the confusion.

-ASA

For those receiving payments in AU currency, the conversion shows in the AdSense account as 0.867 : 1 when it should be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.15 : 1.

With any luck, Google will get on top of this and issue the difference to all affected publishers within the next few days (taking into account that it is a stat holiday in the US on Tuesday) and not making publishers wait until the following month's payment for the difference.

As any AdSense stat junkie knows, when you login to your AdSense account and click the "top channels" link, it automatically brings up your top earning channels for the day, or whichever view you choose, such as today, yesterday, last seven days, and a couple different month options. But since yesterday, the reports haven't been bringing up the top earning channels.

Instead, when viewing the top channels, it seems to be pulling random channels for showing the data. There does not seem to be any rhyme or reason for pulling the specific channels, since they aren't the top (or bottom) of the list even when looking at the other column data.

AdSensePro Ashley commented on Google Groups, and the news isn't good for frequent stats checkers. The issue may not be resolved for weeks, with a fix coming sometime "in the coming weeks".

Hi all,

Thanks again for reporting this issue. Please be assured that it will
be resolved in the coming weeks.
We apologise for any inconvenience it causes you, and appreciate your
patience in the meantime.

Ashley

Granted, we are a week away from Christmas, but it seems that the fix is going to take much longer than would normally be expected, especially since this is definitely the most commonly used reporting selection in the entire control panel, not to mention the most convenient to publishers looking to keep an eye on things. And Christmas is when many publishers keep an extra-close eye on earnings, since they can wildly fluctuate based on market area and traffic over the weeks leading up to and following the holiday season.

Right now, the only way to sort channels by earnings is to go into advance reporting, click to show channel data, then select the "All" link to automatically check all the channels. Then Select group by Channel, then click display report. Then once the report has displayed, in the right hand column, click the "Earnings" link to sort the column by earnings. Not exactly as quick and easy as the old single-click "top channels" way, but at least the multiple-click way does show accurate sorting by earnings once all the clicking is done.

I suspect that it is a new Advanced Reports feature that broke the old sorting... The Inside AdSense blog announced a new feature for generating large reports that is also being added to publisher accounts in the next few weeks.

It will be interesting to see just how long "coming weeks" turns out to be. AdSense has some new features being rolled out or that are expected to be launched over the next couple of months, but it would be a shame if one of the most popular and well-used features is unusable because of these changes.

Changes to AdSense ad clickable areas means likely lower CTR & eCPM

While it doesn't seem to be publicly detailed yet, some publishers have received an email from Google AdSense regarding a change in the way the text ads are formatted, and yes, it is a legitimate email (I received one from an account rep, and I have received many copies of this letter from people who received this as well, and it seems to have been sent to those with account reps).

What is the change? AdSense has just changed where a visitor can click on an ad and actually end up truly clicking the ad to visit that advertiser's site.

This screenshot of an ad unit details the way you used to be able to click on an AdSense ad, and the new areas where a visitor can click on the ad. As you can see, they have dropped the clickable area down by well over half, and with many ad units, it is just a fraction of the original clickable area.

This is already live on publisher's ad units, although it appears to be rolling out as not all ad units are behaving this way yet, so some ad units on your site could be using the new clickable areas while others are not (including the same ad unit sizes on the same site). There is the possibility that Google is also using the rollout to do some A/B testing between the new clickable areas and the old ones, so perhaps the change isn't as certain as the email leads publishers to believe.

It is also worth noting that several smaller ad formats do not have a URL displayed when you use them. Those without a URL appear to have the ad text clickable as well, although this could be a part of the rollout. If this change is permanent, it could make sense for publishers to switch to the smaller ad units if they see a huge drop in CTR and earnings.

The two ad unit sizes without URLs are:

Banner (468x60)

Half Banner (234x60)

The official reason is to reduce the number of accidental clicks, and I suspect it is to help combat the prevalence of "Made for AdSense" sites. But Google is acknowledging that publishers will likely see a decrease in the CTR rate, which means that users will also end up seeing a loss of income. However, Google speculates that as this is making a change good for advertisers, since they are reducing the chance of accidental clicks, that they will also see a trend of more advertisers opting into the content network or increasing their ad spend.

I suspect many publishers will not be happy with this change, especially coming right at the beginning of the hard-core holiday shopping season. While I agree that reducing the ad click area was a good idea, I think they reduced it by far too much. If they wanted to reduce the clickable areas, I do believe they should have kept the ad text area (even if just the specific text area that has text on it) as a clickable area instead of only having the title and URL clickable. In other words, make all the text clickable (Title, Description, URL) and the white space non-clickable, as I am also fairly certain there were clicks made on white space areas that should not have been counted as a legitimate click.

What should you do if you see a drop in income or as a preventative measure to avoid the income drop? First and foremost, change your titles to hyperlink blue, as visitors are used to seeing links in blue. And if your site design doesn't include other on-page links in blue, you might consider a slight style change.

Other things to try include perhaps try mixing some image-only ad units (which remain fully clickable) or try some of the non-URL ad units. And yes, I believe publishers will see a drop in income due to this change, meaning some publishers will have less Christmas spending money than expected.

I am seeing some slight initial CTR drops, but I will continue to monitor it as the rollout becomes more complete (not all of my ad units have the new clickable areas) and post followups, including what happens with the non-URL ad units.

What do you think of the changes? Are you happy with them or not-so-happy?

Publishers probably remember the Chitika audited payments scandal which saw many publishers earnings drop by about half, with some losing as much as 90% of the earnings. I was one of the victims, and ended up removing Chitika off the majority of my sites. I do earn enough with referral earnings and the limited pages I still run it on for test purposes to get a check a month. Isn't much, but meets the minimum check requirement and supports my Starbucks addiction :)

However, when my check arrived at the end of September, my bank would not accept it. Why? Because they had also printed someone else's check on the back of mine... complete with their name and earning amount (no, I am not going to say whose check I received printed on the back of mine). But whoever did the Chitika checks thought it would be fine to just simply use a pen and cross out the other check printed on the back of my check and then send it off to me. Well, funny, but banks don't seem to like a second check printed and scratched out on the back of a check I am trying to deposit!

So, fine, everyone makes mistakes, it should be simple to clear it up, right? Fire off a support ticket and get the check re-issued either immediately or at the very least, when the next payment for me is processed at the end of the month. Apparently not, it is definitely easier said than done. I submit a support request on October 4th, mark it as priority urgent and explain the situation. And get no response. So I follow up again two weeks later, on the 19th, again tagging it as urgent. And no response. So now here we are, one day short of two weeks after my last support request, and nearly a month after my initial support contact and my support ticket is still sitting as "Open" without a single response from Chitika. I can't imagine they have so many support requests that mine could possible go nearly a month without a single person looking at it or even sending a simple "Hey, I need to check this out, but I'm on it" response.

And aside from the fact I can't get a support response, then there is the privacy issue. I know I certainly wouldn't be happy if it had been my check on the wrong side, and this other person saw my payment amount and details printed on the check and check stub. But here I am with Mr. K's check printed on the back, knowing exactly how much he made.

And what about Joe Publisher who might really need that money for rent, mortgage or food? Not cool for Chitika to not even respond, even if the issue couldn't be dealt with immediately. Any response is better than complete silence. And Chitika's competitor's fix their payment issues when they pop up.

I did see my check for September earnings has just been sent, but no, the amount of the August earnings was not added to that, because I also had wondered if maybe someone had dealt with it but a response back to me was never made. No such luck.

Now, someone blogged today (and many times over the past month while I have been waiting for a response) from Chitika, so somebody is home. But it seems getting a support request answered is impossible. With no way to get a response from Chitika, I am basically writing off this amount since I can't get a response and will be removing the last of my Chitika from my pages, something I do know many publishers have done for their own reasons. But this entire situation is definitely a disappointment from someone who lived through the audit fiasco and lost a substantial amount of money because of that too. I know others have had issues with Chitika as well, and now no longer use them or recommend them.

Perhaps I should have challenged them to a Team Slayer match so I could have finally gotten a response from them, and gotten 4000 MS points to boot.

Update: I have not received any communication from Chitika other than the comments some Chitika people made to this blog entry, and a blog post they made. No emails or phone calls whatsoever, and my support request online simply vanished from my account, instead of Chitika posting something on it as a followup or the ticket being listed as closed. Ryan Travis of Chitika posted that the check was being sent Fed-Ex, but it just finally showed up today having been sent regular USPS snail mail.

Looks like Microsoft ContentAds have started showing up in the wild, meaning it is getting a step closer to potential publishers. I just spotted some ads served by Microsoft on Digg. As you remember, Microsoft and Digg signed an agreement back in July that Microsoft would sell and serve advertisements on Digg.

Not surprisingly, these ads are only showing up for users if Internet Explorer (didn't they learn their lesson from the whole adCenter brouhaha when they failed to support Firefox for advertsers at all?) so I hope they do make the ads viewable in Firefox before launching a wider beta, because I know many webmasters won't touch them with a five foot pole if the ads are only seen by IE users.

But that also means that Google AdSense ads are being displayed to non-IE users, which means either Microsoft's ad serving doesn't work for non-IE or they don't have the inventory needed to supply Digg at this time. Or perhaps it is still in roll-out phase.

First off, here is an example of their text ad units (they are running both text and image currently).

The ads appear to be coming from adCenter's inventory. But the targeting appears to have some issues and strikes me as being very YPN-ish. But this is a homepage which covers a mass of topics, so I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to targeting, until I can see the ads on individual pages.

Here is an example of the javascript code used:

<script type="text/javascript">
dapMgr.enableACB("top_ad_msft", false);
dapMgr.renderAd("top_ad_msft", "&PG=DIG728&AP=1390",
728, 90);
</script >
</div><div class="permalink-wrap"><div id="contents">
<div id="wrapper">
<div class="sidebar-short"><div id="item_ad_msft"
class="item_ad_image">
<script type="text/javascript">
dapMgr.enableACB("item_ad_msft", false);
dapMgr.renderAd("item_ad_msft", "&PG=DIG300&AP=1089",
300, 250);
</script >

And here is where the click on an ad goes:
http://0.r.msn.com/?ld=2vjaQLTbvSCsi7GlJaZNkak8uz6g1HBEVyKHnXY/
QPa0uO6pNLlqIi8EQNAJmc0OiLfKxWWxZym+DlUQ4PWCc3o9jiaYJYqKPlMOQuqEkSlo8LNq3
+XtW74VwlZJUEikKiwDt0XcaFKUEaCm3LIY3FjWwn5sLGoJVwAq2JzvyhLtVnljJyFUpWLoieRJqt0RNvJkGLFLMh45BAK4JGIgs=

What sort of image ads have I seen? Mostly tech (especially phone or wireless related) and business ads, with a few requisite screensaver/cursor/smiley ads, the typical kind of image based ads you see on any site. And yes, I did see some ads for Windows products ;) They are primarily Flash, however, and not gif or jpg. There does seem to be a slight delay waiting on the ads being served.

They are also running additional text ads using Kanoodle's ad inventory. I am not sure if this is simply backfill or if they are being displayed in a specific rotation. First, here is what the Kanoodle version of the ad units look like from the Digg home page:

The ad serving code used is:
<script type="text/javascript">
dapMgr.enableACB("hottest_ad_msft", false);
dapMgr.renderAd("hottest_ad_msft", "&PG=DIG16B&SEG=90&AP=1090",
160, 600);
</script >

But the ads are also being served using Kanoodle's ad inventory rather than ContentAds, with tracking links similar to
http://context3.kanoodle.com/cgi-bin/context.cgi?
id=xxxxxxx&db=context&cgroup=90&format=digg160x600if&
newtarget=1&numresults=5&signup=1
(I xxxx what appeared to be the specific ad number).

Here is an example of the Kanoodle ad units, which look different than the one with Microsoft's own text ads.

I am only seeing text ads (either adCenter or Kanoodle) when viewing the home pages (ie. the pages that show the listings of what has been Dugg), all the internal pages with the comments seem to be all Flash ads.

I am also surprised they are not branding these ad units with "Ads by Microsoft" or "Ads by ContentAds" to get all us potential publishers excited... unless they were hoping we wouldn't notice they are running ContentAds on publisher sites yet ;)

I checked with Microsoft adCenter on the ads. Natala Menezes, Product Manager at adCenter said, "We are doing testing across our network as explore the best ways to distribute ads that benefit users, publishers and advertisers."

Additionally, Microsoft has begun serving ads on Facebook as well, although I have only seen the image versions of the ads, and no text ad versions.

Which of the two ad styles do you prefer? I was surprised at how different they look from each other. The Microsoft one reminds me very much of the early version of the YPN ad units, while the Kanoodle reminds me more of the premium publisher AdSense.

And I know what everyone wants to know... how can you get in the ContentAds beta? Well, unless you are Digg or Facebook sized and sign a special deal, there are no plans to offer a version for smaller publishers yet, althogh it is safe to assume there will be one... sometime. I am still guessing "sometime" in 2008, but since this is already out of the gate, if it goes well, perhaps we will see something limited prior to then for selected publishers. Are people still interested in testing out ContentAds or are you mostly going to wait and here the feedback from other publishers before testing it out personally?

I will keep you posted when I hear more dates or when it hits beta!

Added: You can Digg it here :)

It's that time again, there's been yet another update to the AdSense Policies. Don't forget, like always, the terms of service we all agreed to says we must comply with the policies whenever they are updated. Fortunately for publishers, the only change was the addition of the AdSense for Mobile program policies, which include additional polocies separate from the regular AdSense program policies and are found here.

The new AdSense for Mobile policies are pretty straight forward... now if only they will add a date to that page, so we will know when they change :)
